I LOVE YOU IN SIGN LANGUAGE

We all communicate with gestures to some extent, but some have only the dexterity of sign language with which to be understood. As I grew up in a deaf world, using the hands to construct meaning is at the heart of my expressiveness. The sign for I Love You codifies a fundamental emotion, but there is added value in that it is also the 'sign of the horns' as used by rock and heavy metal music fans!

ROLLEIFLEX CAMERA

Sometimes, even those with an eye for spotting beauty can have trouble seeing clearly. Buying my first camera and enrolling in a photography course was a moment that changed my life -- and perhaps even saved it. Following a spiritual experience at my darkest moment, the acquisition of this simple yet powerful device offered a fresh perspective on the difficulties I was going through and allowed me to see that there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

LARRY

When you're as happy as Larry, the world is a wonderful place, which is why this piece is named after the man who is synonymous with happiness itself. The spectacles on his nose may be crooked, but Larry always looks life straight in the eye, for even when the storm clouds roil and rumble, to him every day is a clear summer sky.

OLD MAN'S NIGHTMARE

“I hope I die before I get old,” sang The Who -- a sentiment that chimes with my own fears of the aging process. Of course, it is not so much the journey as the final destination that keeps me awake at night. Will I one day become this old man, clawing at the darkness as I recoil from what Edgar Allan Poe called “those little slices of death”?
