Learn the craft of writing

  • Creative Writing

Have you always harboured a desire to be a writer? Maybe your life’s story could be an inspiration to others if you only choose the right words? With an online creative writing course, you can learn from the comfort of your home all of the techniques needed to write a short piece of fiction.

The course covers all aspects of creative writing, including how to expand a simple idea into a story outline, developing characters and dialogue, understanding plot and theme, and the importance of editing and proofreading to polish up your work.

The beginners’ class introduces participants to the basics of story development, while the more advanced class looks at how vital it is to revise and rewrite your work through various drafts to arrive at an accomplished piece of fiction.

Participants are provided with short stories written by a number of celebrated masters of the form, including Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe, Frank O'Connor, and Shirley Jackson, critically analysing the texts to explore and better understand the technical process of writing.

Practical exercises feature, as does required reading, with the overall aim being for the learners to acquire the advanced skills needed to complete a finished draft of their own short story of between 2,000 and 5,000 words.

So contact I Before E today and take the first step towards beginning a new chapter in your life.

  • Business Workshops

I Before E can deliver online training workshops to your staff in writing blogs and social media articles.

After determining what particular services or areas of business you want to emphasise in your online marketing, I research current trends in your sector to determine what your competitors are doing and ensure that all relevant information is included to provide content of a high standard.

I then create a sample article in line with your specifications and forward this for your perusal, before making any amendments or additions based on your feedback. This article is used as a learning material in the workshop, which is delivered in a lecture format comprising slides and oral delivery interspersed with practical exercises for the participants.

I clearly outline the step-by-step process by which I created the original article, adhering to the writing techniques of expanding an idea into an outline, researching the topic, developing a first draft, reworking the text through a second and even third draft, and finally editing and proofreading.

Participants are then encouraged to apply to their own writing the techniques they have been shown, by selecting a theme they wish to explore and writing an article on this subject.

The final step is a follow-up workshop. I read the participants’ articles in advance and offer feedback, suggesting any improvements that will help bolster the finished work.

Bite-sized tips

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, which is why your introduction needs to hook the audience and keep them hanging on your every word.

But the perfect beginning is often the final part of the journey when creating a piece of copy.
